In fact, dear old CAT5 cable has been taken on for uses far in excess of its original design intention and most installers will agree that a few extra runs of this inexpensive cable can have unexpected uses, often surprisingly soon after installation.
If, however, your project is in a home that is fully constructed and in good decorative order, wireless control of sound and lighting and wireless distribution of audio and video can massively reduce both the cost and physical impact of even quite sophisticated installations.
