The term structured wiring applies to networks of cabling, usually (in offices) integrating data, telecoms and maybe video. In a domestic setting, it differs only in allowing for music distribution and lighting control.
The standard data cable is called CAT5. It is inexpensive and has, by virtue of its ubiquity, is now extremely versatile.
It is unlikely that many would have predicted the dramatic improvements in wireless technology over the past couple of years. The impression might be that wiring is now less of a requirement.
